Section XVII - Uniform Regulations

1. General

  1. Uniforms will conform in material and general description to the provisions of AR 600-35, and in the manner in which they are worn, to the provisions of AR 600-40.
  2. (1) No article of outer clothing will be worn as a part of the uniform by officers unless it conforms in material, style, and cut to the specifications listed in AR 600-35.
    (2) No article of outer clothing will be worn as a part of the uniform by enlisted men which is not the government issue unless it conforms in every respect to the issue article.
  3. Officers and enlisted men will wear the uniform at all times when out of the house or quarters except when dressed for exercise in exercise clothing and actually exercising.
  4. The jacket, field, may be worn with the fatigue uniform by enlisted men when engaged in manual labor for which the overcoat would be too bulky. Its use under other conditions and by officers is prohibited. After April 15th, and until such time as they are again authorized, the jacket, field, will not be worn.
  5. Officers and noncommissioned officers will, by their appearance, carriage and demeanor, set an example for neatness and strict conformity to regulations in matters of dress, uniform and deportment. Failure in this respect will result in reduction, or disciplinary action.
  6. Officers will constantly be on the alert to note improper wearing of the uniform. Corrections will be made on the spot, if possible. Flagrant violations will be reported to organizations concerned and prompt disciplinary actions will be taken by organization and detachment commanders.

2. Prescribed Uniform for Enlisted Men.

  1. Winter.
    1. Service Uniform:
      Cap, garrison, wool (overseas)
      Coat, woolen, OD
      Shirt, woolen, OD
      Tie, black (unless otherwise ordered)
      Trousers, woolen, OD
      Belt, web, waist.
      Shoes, service
      Socks, wool or cotton, tan
      1. The cap, garrison (overseas) will be worn tilted over the right brow - edge at top of right ear.
      2. During rainy weather, enlisted men while in formation, will wear the hat, herringbone, twill, with brim turned down all around. Out of formation, either the garrison cap or field hat may be worn.
      3. The cap, service, wool may be worn only after retreat on pass, on Sunday and holidays, and furlough, and then only if the belt, leather (garrison) is also worn. Both are optional).
      4. The rubber cap cover for the cap, service, may be worn during rainy weather if the raincoat is also worn. At all other times its use is prohibited.
      5. The coat, woolen, OD, will not be worn between reveille and retreat, except for ceremonies and inspections. After retreat it is required to be worn at all times when outside quarters except when on kitchen police or, in rare instances, when required to do work for which the fatigue uniform is prescribed. In certain seasons, the use of the Service Uniform without the coat will be directed.
      6. The shirt, cotton, tan, may be worn with the coat, woolen, OD, at all times except during ceremonies and inspections but will not be worn as an outer garment during the wool season.
      7. The necktie will be tucked in between the first (collar) and second buttons of the shirt, when the coat, woolen, OD, is not worn.
      8. Shoes, russet, civilian, with plain toes, may be worn after retreat if not in formation.
      9. Gloves, woolen, OD, will be worn at all times with the Service Uniform while the overcoat is worn.
      10. The overcoat will be worn: in formation - when prescribed; at other times -optional.
      11. No formation will have any mixed uniform.
      12. The raincoat will be worn during rainy weather only.
      13. Use of blanket-lined mackinaws is prohibited until further orders at this post.
    2. Fatigue Uniform:
      Hat, herringbone, twill (brim down all the way around)
      Jacket, herringbone twill
      Trousers, herringbone twill
      Shoes, service.
      Socks, wool or cotton, tan
      1. The suit, working, one piece, may be worn if issued in lieu of the jacket and trousers, herringbone twill.
      2. The fatigue uniform will be worn by enlisted men undergoing processing, drill, fatigue duty, kitchen police, and work requiring fatigue clothes. At all other times, the service uniform is required.
      3. The fatigue uniform will be worn by noncommissioned officers when engaged in supervising a formation, such as drill, at which the fatigue uniform is prescribed for the men in ranks. It may also be worn by noncommissioned officers by special permission of the organizational commander when engaged in duties for which the service uniform is not suitable. When so worn by NCO's, the fatigue uniform will be well fitting and have chevrons properly attached.
      4. No trousers will be worn strapped at the bottom.
    3. Athletic Uniform:
      Appropriate athletic clothing may be worn for athletics.

  2. Summer
    1. Service Uniform:
      Cap, garrison, cotton (overseas)
      Shirt, cotton, tan
      Tie, cotton, tan
      Trousers, cotton, tan
      Belt, web, waist.
      Shoes, service
      Socks, cotton tan
      1. For instructions pertaining to the raincoat, necktie, rainy weather see appropriate sub-paragraph under a above.
    2. Fatigue Uniform - see paragraph 2.a.2 above
    3. Athletic Uniform - see paragraph 2.a.3 above

3. Prescribed Uniform for Officers.

  1. Winter
    1. Service Uniform:
      Cap, garrison, wool (overseas)
      Coat, woolen, OD
      Shirt, cotton, tan
      Tie, tan
      Trousers, woolen, OD (light shade)
      Belt, web, waist (plain buckle)
      Shoes, russet
      Socks, tan
      1. The cap, garrison (overseas) will be worn by all officers while on duty at this Air Corps station. It will be worn tilted to the right and slightly forward.
      2. The cap, service may be worn by officers while off the post.
      3. The rubber cap cover for the cap, service may be worn during rainy weather if the raincoat is also worn. It will be promptly removed when the rain ceases. Violations in wearing this article will result in total prohibition therof.
      4. The belt, cloth will be worn with the coat, woolen, OD by all officers assigned or attached to this station. Sam Browne belt may be worn off the post when desired.
      5. The coat, woolen, O.D. will normally be worn habitually by all officers. By special permission it may be dispensed with when engaged in duties for which it is not suitable. After retreat, it is required at all times when outside quarters. During certain seasons the use of the Service Uniform, winter, without the coat will be as directed.
      6. The shirt, woolen, OD may be worn within the coat, woolen, OD.
      7. The necktie will be tucked between the first (collar) and second buttons of the shirt when the coat, woolen, OD is not worn.
      8. The overcoat or short coat will be worn; in formation - when prescribed; at other times - optional.
      9. A raincoat of commercial pattern, as nearly as practicable the color of the Service Uniform, may be worn during rainy weather. It will not be worn for warmth.
    2. Dress Uniform:
      The blue dress uniform may be worn as prescribed in AR 600-38.
    3. Fatigue Uniform:
      Under no condition will officers wear fatigue uniform.
    4. Athletic Uniform:
      Athletic clothing may be worn for athletics.
  2. Summer.
    1. Service Uniform:
      Cap, garrison, cotton (overseas)
      Shirt, cotton, tan
      Tie, tan
      Trousers, cotton, tan
      Belt, web, waist
      Shoes, tan.
      Socks, tan
      1. For instructions pertaining to the raincoat, necktie, etc., see appropriate sub-paragraph under a above.
      2. The summer Service Uniform is prescribed between reveille and retreat. After retreat, officers may wear the summer service, white or blue dress, or the winter Service Uniform.

    2. Dress Uniform:
      The blue or white dress uniform may be worn as prescribed in AR 600-38.

    3. Athletic Uniform - see paragraph 3a (4) above.

4. Insignia.

  1. Insignia will be worn as prescribed in Section IV, AR 600-40, August 28, 1941.
  2. Distinctive insignia for the Air Corps Technical Training Command will be worn by all officers, warrant officers, and enlisted men assigned to the Air Corps Technical Training Command, as prescribed in TT Circular #4, 1942.
  3. All officers and enlisted men assigned to the Air Corps Technical Training Command will wear the War Department Overhead shoulder patch on their coat, overcoat, and short coat.
  4. All officers and enlisted men assigned to the 7th Corps Area Service Command will wear the 7th Corps Area Service Command shoulder patch on their coat, overcoat, and short coat.
  5. No insignia other than insignia of rank by officers will be worn on the raincoat.
